CONGENITAL FLEXURAL DEFORMITIES OF NEWBORN CALVES

Abstract

In this study; The diagnosis, treatment method and results of calves of different ages, breeds and genders brought to Sivas Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital Surgery Clinic with complaints of inability to step on the ground and bad leg posture due to musculoskeletal system anomalies were evaluated. The material of the study consisted of a total of 18 calves of different breeds, ages and genders. As a result of clinical and radiographic examinations, 13 calves were diagnosed with bouletur (72.22%), 3 calves with arqur (16.66%) and 2 calves with arthrogryposis (11.11%). When the calves were evaluated in terms of race, there were 8 Montofon calves (44.44%), 7 Simmental calves (38.88%) and 3 Montofon mixed breed calves (16.66%). According to gender, 12 calves were determined to be male and 6 calves were female. According to race, the most cases were found in Montofon (n=8, 44.44%) race; This was followed by Simmental (n=7, 38.88%) and Montofon hybrid (n=3, 16.66%). According to gender, it was determined that the cases were more common in males (n=12, 66.66%) than in females (n=6, 33.34%). In the treatment of calves with anomalies related to the musculoskeletal system, PVC supported bandage was applied to 12 bouletur cases as a conservative method, and "Z" tenotomy was performed operatively in 1 bouletur and 3 arqur cases. Arthrogryposis cases could not be treated because complete ankylosis occurred in the joints. In conclusion; Early diagnosis of flexor tendon contractures in newborn calves gives positive results in treatment. It has been understood that PVC-supported bandage alone will be sufficient in mild and moderate bouletur cases that are diagnosed early and treatment is started, and that PVC-supported bandage will give successful results in the treatment of advanced bouletur and moderate arqur cases following the operation.
