Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to explain why dental caries is more common in stray dogs in different living conditions compared to domestic dogs. The study was carried out on the teeth of 34 dogs of different breeds, ages and sexes, with different living conditions, brought to Erciyes University, Faculty of Veterinary Surgery, Department of Surgery for various reasons. The dogs were divided equally into two main groups as street and pet dogs, according to their living conditions. The cases were examined with a probe and macroscopically in terms of dental caries, considering dental plaque, calculus, periodontal disease and abrasion conditions. While bruises were observed in only 1 of the pet dogs in the study, the presence of the lesion was noted in all stray dogs. Caries were mostly seen as yellow-brown staining on the occlusal surfaces and proximal of maxillary 4th premolar, 1st and 2nd molars and mandibular teeth. Less caries was encountered in canine teeth. Dental abrasion was encountered in almost all of the decayed teeth. According to statistical analysis data, it was determined that there was a weakly significant relationship between dental plaque and calculus at different levels and dental caries. However, no significant difference was found between caries and animals with periodontal disease.
As a result, it was determined that the living conditions of the dogs had a statistically significant relationship on dental caries. Housing conditions, diets, behavioral disorders, inadequate dental health and oral hygiene, etc. Many factors were found to affect the oral and dental health of stray dogs more than pets. Due to the scarcity of studies examining the effects of living conditions on caries development, these differences could not be fully explained. For this reason, increasing studies will be beneficial in terms of taking measures to protect the oral and dental health of animals.
